About this piece:
It’s been meaningful revisiting this piece. I began the original in 2014 during a period of deep inner work, then stepped away from it for several years before finally completing it in 2019. I then began this embellished version in 2022/23(?) at earth frequency festival in QLD Australia, before completing it this year while going through another phase of inner work 🌚🌞.
The picture is about a boy who places a mask over his face to hide his true self. For me, inner work is usually only instigated in times of discomfort. The poem I wrote in 2014 to accompany it reads:
‘Poor little mask boy
Sits in cold dead space
All alone
He is sick of this place’
In the story of the piece, an angel appears to console him. She places a box on his lap, and the boy begins to work with the pieces behind the mask, putting his favourite parts into the box.
This is essentially an original, a lot of time, care, and intention has gone into this version. I’m not sure if or when I’ll create another like it.
It’s difficult to fully capture how it actually looks in photos. The balance between UV light and normal light, as well as the angle you view it from, changes how it appears 🎭🌈.
